Coldplay endorses OneWorld’s single ‘Freedom for Palestine’
Coldplay, in a bold move, has endorsed the catchy new single ‘Freedom for Palestine’ by OneWorld, on their Facebook page. This has led to a storm of political discussions on the page, and has caused a tidal wave of admiration in pro-Palestinian ranks all over the world.
Although they probably barely need any introduction, let’s remind you that the British alternative rock band Coldplay, formed in 1996 by lead vocalist Chris Martin and lead guitarist Jonny Buckland, is known worldwide for hits such as ‘Yellow’, ‘Trouble’ and ‘Don’t Panic’.
It seems that no artistic community is as much on the move as that of musicians, when it comes to supporting the cause for Palestinian freedom. In the past year, many world famous artists including the late Gil Scott-Heron, Elvis Costello and the Pixies have cancelled their gigs in Tel Aviv as a statement against zionist racism and Apartheid, apparently setting off a trend that continues to reverberate across the global musical community.
The latest eye-opener in this new and fast-growing tendency among musicians is Coldplay’s brave endorsement of a song that calls out unequivocally for Palestinian freedom. The song itself is being targeted on Youtube by online zionist activists with a barrage of ‘dislikes’. At the time of publishing this article, the number of song hits after only a week had reached 63,567 hits, with 1,321 likes and 2,252 dislikes.
As remarkable as it may seem on first sight, Coldplay’s endorsement of a song that supports the Palestinian cause should not come as a complete surprise. The band is known for having a progressive attitude towards human rights issues all across the world, and has already made clear statements in the past by their rejection of having their songs used in commercials for corporate industries such as Coca-Cola, Gatorade and Gap, and their expressed support for organizations such as Amnesty International and Oxfam.
The song itself is available for pre-order at iTunes and at HMV Digital, and was craftily written by Dave Randall. It features a host of international musicians including Maxi Jazz from Faithless, Jamie Catto from 1 Giant Leap and Lowkey, and is bound to appeal to many music-lovers in the world.
Organizations involved in the release of this song are the Palestine Solidarity Campaign, Jews for Justice for Palestinians, A Just Peace for Palestine, Friends of Al Aqsa, Stop the War Coalition and War on Want.
All proceeds from the single will go to the UK Charity War on Want for projects in Palestine.
