Free song of the week: We Resist (Free Palestine)
This weeks free song is ‘We Resist (Free Palestine)’. In fact it is the newest song in Doc Jazz’s repertoire – if you don’t count the recent string of song remakes – and was written and recorded in the late fall of 2010. The song is about the resistance against the crimes of the zionist entity, but focuses not only on the Palestinian resistance from within. It is also a tribute to the growing international movement for the restoration of Palestinian national rights.
The relatively fast-paced verses feature a jazz-rock/fusion groove with a ‘walking bass’, combining with the melody and the words to give a sense of urgency. In the chorus, which musically creates more of a mass-effect with the crowd chanting ‘Free Palestine’ and the beat turning into a more steady and solid rhythm, the message of unity and steadfastness is conveyed. If you think that’s all, then you may be surprised by the part that follows the chorus: authentic Palestinian shibbabeh (flute) riffs that create a fusion between traditional dabkeh and a modern funky beat.
The music video shows images of Palestinian non-violent resistance, as well as demonstrations by Palestine supporters outside of Palestine. The footage from these demonstrations was filmed in Amsterdam, and includes some images of the dedicated Palestine-supporter Gretta Duisenberg who attended this demonstration together with Doc Jazz.
Although Doc Jazz usually plays all instruments in his songs by himself (except in the songs on the album Front Door Key, which was produced by Forrest Thomas and features an array of outstanding musicians from the Dutch jazz/fusion scene), this is also the first music video in which he can be seen playing the electric guitar.
Check out the entire repertoire by clicking here – you will find a huge line up of songs of resistance that call for the liberation of Palestine, but also some other songs with ‘lighter’ topics.
Last but not least, check out the music video on Youtube below, and share it with your friends !
