‘Leaving it up to Fate’: dealing with Alzheimer’s
One of the songs on Doc Jazz’s new album, Leaving it up to Fate, is an expression of his emotions about dealing with the fact that his mother has fallen victim to Alzheimer’s disease.
On his Facebook page, Doc Jazz recounts how he arrived at processing the trauma. He explains how this led to writing the song.
“I will share the story of how that became a song. I was reading the Qur’an, and I came across Surat Al Hajj … reading that filled me with a deep sense of comfort, practically instantly. I realized that spending the end of your life in a state of dementia, is one of the possible endings that Allah may have destined for you, and there is no judgment involved in that, it is just one of the existing variations.”
Undoubtedly, you will want to read the entire post on Facebook, to find out how this resulted in a song.
Delicate uncertainty
Rebecca Cullen, from Stereo Stickman, highlighted the song in her album review. It is unlikely that she had any idea that the topic of this song was related to Alzheimer’s disease. Regardless, her impression of it is spot-on:
“Leaving It Up To Fate is a stand-out example of distant thankfulness. Giving blessing to someone else’s happiness, with or without you in their life, is a powerful thing. The melody and progression here is beautiful, moving from delicate uncertainty to a sort of funk-soaked optimism; a later moment that uplifts with ease.”
This song is bound to touch the hearts of those who have a close relative who has fallen victim to Alzheimer’s, or other forms of dementia.
