Shireen Issawi Wins International Alkarama Award for Human Rights Defenders
The international Free Shireen Issawi Campaign wishes to inform supporters of Shireen, the lawyer and activist held in solitary confinement in Israel’s military occupation prison system, and all supporters of those who defend the political and human rights of the Palestinian people, that Shireen Issawi is the winner of the international Alkarama award for Human Rights Defenders.
Alkarama is a Swiss-based, independent human rights non-governmental organization. It was established in 2004 to assist all those in the Arab World subjected to, or at risk of, extrajudicial killings, disappearances, torture and arbitrary detention.
The Alkarama award for Human Rights Defenders is given once a year to an individual or organization that has significantly contributed to the promotion and protection of human rights in the Arab world.
We see this award as a gesture of solidarity with the political prisoner, Shireen Issawi, who was arrested in suppression of and revenge for her stance with Palestinian political prisoners and her work on the campaign for her brother, Samer Issawi, during his hunger-strike.
This award is a badge of honor for Shireen, her family, Palestinian political prisoners fighting for freedom in Israel’s military occupation prisons and all political prisoners around the world fighting for justice and freedom for their people.
Whilst this is an honor for the International Free Shireen Issawi Campaign, affiliated to Human Rights Defenders in Palestine, the real honor will come when Shireen is free to receive the award herself in Geneva and when all political prisoners are free from Israel’s military occupation prison system.
We send our sincere gratitude to the organization, Alkarama, and to all those who helped this campaign succeed by spreading the message and continuing to expose the violations of Israel’s racist policies against the Palestinian political prisoners inside the military occupation prisons.
On behalf of the campaign team,
Badia Dwaik,
Coordinator, Human Rights Defenders
