Doc Jazz’s new single ‘Twenty Twenty’ was launched on YouTube on August 28, and was greeted with praise by music reviewers. This post puts the highlights from those reviews together, as a celebration of the new song. The single will come out on the other music platforms (Spotify, Apple Music, Deezer, Amazon etc.) in the coming days. Just stay tuned, and you will be kept informed!

Doc Jazz

Stepkid magazine

Stepkid Magazine has reviewed Doc Jazz’s releases before. Reviewer Anastim Ducray: “One thing I like about this song is how bright and vibrant the tone is, even when the lyrical narrative deals with subjects like deception and betrayal.” Apparently, he classifies it as jazz, which may not be the best description of the musical style of the song. It’s pop music, leaning heavily on funk and disco. However, Ducray is apparently also aware of this: “… will appeal even to people who might not normally have a strong affinity for jazz. You can really shake it to this track, which at times ventures dangerously close to EDM/disco territory.”

Ducray has commented on Doc Jazz’s vocals in previous reviews, and yet again has some good words for them. “The vocals are brimming with afflicted passion and sincere sentiment. Doc’s delivery is soulfully dynamic, and his voice is just naturally very expressive.”

In previous reviews, he was also impressed with the musical and technical side. He feels the same way about Twenty Twenty. “Doc Jazz is technically very proficient, with a meticulous attention to musical detail … production quality is professional, with a sound clarity that would more than satisfy the average stereophile.” Check out the review here!

Stereo Stickman

Rebecca Cullen of the music magazine “Stereo Stickman” is a talented writer, with a solid musical background. She has also done reviews of Doc Jazz before, which is apparent from her line: “As always, this includes superb musicianship …”

While she expands on the technical aspects of the production, it clearly sits well with her. Her positive impression is expressed in lines such as “… a short, snappy melody that resolves in a unique and memorable way.” Also: “… the song has a timeless quality about it, meaning it’s easy to get into, and yet the more intently you listen, or with each revisit, the more the details and intricacies stand out and impress.”

She also has positive comments on the music video: “… striking and equally nostalgic yet crisp set of visuals …” All in all, she characterizes it as a “… strangely captivating and passionate release”, but a “… pleasure to listen to, and a brilliantly recognizable piece of music and performance.” Check out the full review here!

The Frizzo Show

It should come as no surprise that a TV show host views the release mostly from its video perspective. Nevertheless, Frizzo‘s response is quite positive: “… the video concept is very cool a miniature dancer appears from inside of a delivery and dances all throughout the length of the video to the song …”

Frizzo also classifies the song as “modern jazz” (this tends to happen, with an artist name such as Doc Jazz!). All in all, his verdict on the song is a definite plus – and as you can see from his other reviews, this is not always the case. “This is just a cool video with a cool concept. I like it, great submission, great video, great song.” Check out the full review here!

Static Dive

Bob Smith of Static Dive doesn’t comment on the video, and keeps his comments on the music mostly on the descriptive level. Apparently, he is more intrigued by the persona of Doc Jazz. Nevertheless, although he doesn’t expand in great depth on his opinion of ‘Twenty Twenty’, he does have positive things to say. He refers to the guitar as “funky”, to the saxophone solos as “slick”, and to the singing as “soulful”. Also, at the end of the review, he refers to Doc Jazz as “interesting and skillful“. Camden Monthly

Matt Herman of Camden Monthly views the single from an entirely different angle. He is mostly struck by the message and the lyrics of the song. While other reviewers have touched upon them briefly, almost his entire review is focused on the topic.

He does comment on the vocals: “Doc Jazz’s  vocals are adept for facing down any challenge that comes along.  He really makes great drama out of the song’s lightly ironic twist and brings an appealing combination of grit and melodicism to play delivering the song’s lyrics.” He also lauds the song from a production perspective, “the single showcases amazing production“. Most of his review, however, deals with the topic of the song, which he feels carries a “strong message”. Check out the full review here!
